    5 x 7, interesting choice of sizes.

    • this is in one of those book like sketchbooks, its easier to carry around, and its a standard frame size

I have one of those too, I think it’s 5 x 7, possibly smaller, but not larger. It works out really well.

      • yes, its something thats easy to carry around as it is, with just a pencil or a pen, without having to carry all the gear for bigger productions, sometimes I have two bigger sketchbooks and a bundle of pencils and coloured pencils, then some watercolour stuff and a jug of water, and then I should really have a cart just to carry it all around 🙂

I never got into the habit of carrying around a camera. It would have been too expensive to buy film all the time and have it developed and many times, the photo didn’t come out well enough to work from. I get a lot more information and retain more of the original impetus if I do a small drawing, also I don’t have a wide angle lens, so I could never fit everything in the way I wanted.

    • The digital camera has made a huge difference. I have quite a bit of artwork from the 70’s and 80’s that didn’t get recorded in anyway because film and camera’s where too expensive. And I wasn’t thinking about it too clearly. Now I carry the camera wherever I’m sketching, I don’t always use it for anything, but when I forget it or decide not to take it, I always see something that makes me wish I had it, like the other day at the park, going over the bridge where the mother goose has laid her egg on the concrete. I had some from before, but I don’t want to miss when the chick hatches, I’m wondering how it will get down to the water from the bridge, its about a four foot drop, and a waterfall on one side.

Yes, the digital has its uses, and the scanner. There were many times I did not finish a painting, because it looked so good halfway through, and I had no way of showing that other than to not finish! I hope you get some pix of the egg, I’m sure the geese have figured out the four foot drop and the waterfall, I hope so anyway.

      • I’m on my way there to find out.
