This is part of the war memorial in the same park across the road from my studio. I painted this sketch last summer. I will try to paint the entire thing this year.

  1. As always I like simplicity in a painting. Here the cool greens give warmth to the stone.

      I’m going to try and capture the monument again as a whole. But its a very large piece of stone, including a soldier in a sort of crucified pose. I’m thinking it may be better to sketch it out in parts, perhaps leave out a lot of the text thats included.

      • I’m looking forward to it, I learn a lot from your style. My tendency is to overpaint whereas this painting shows how effective are sparing well chosen marks.

        Thank you. Thats really nice to hear. I really enjoy your work, sometimes overpainting is the best strategy for achieving textures and depth. As long as our heat wave lasts here in Ontariario I will be over at the park trying to warm up for the market season. I’m hoping some people will join me this year for lessons in the park.
